Eyes Wide Open

Welcome

Brisbane, river city...

The Storey Bridge over the Brisbane river

The Brisbane river snakes its way lazily from it's source in the Brisbane Range, through the Brisbane Valley, into Lake Wivenhoe, past Wivenhoe Dam, and eventually through the city of Brisbane and out into Moreton Bay.

A seemingly placid river, occasionally it reminds those that live on it's banks that it is still a force of nature.

The latest in a long series of reminders occured January 2011, when the wettest December since 1859 resulted in more water than could be safely contained at Wivenhoe Dam. The ensuing flooding resulted in the evacuation of the Brisbane CBD, and the suburbs of Fortitude Valley and West End, plus substantial flooding and twenty thousand homes affected in locations along the river.

It is into this that our protagonists awaken...

Eyes Wide Open is a Mage: The Awakening game set in the city of Brisbane, Australia.

Firstly, I would like to lay the blame firmly at the feet of CrazyJane, Proffbear and DaveB. The former two for the awesome games they are running that I'm currently playing in, and the later for the awesome write-ups that I've been seeing on RPG.net. Without them I wouldn't have had the idea, and that idea wouldn't have grown into this game.

Themes

This game has an overarching theme, however I don't want to talk about it here because knowing it will give things away to my players. For the moment it will have to remain hidden.

Other themes in the game are:

Discovery

The PC's are all newly awoken, less than two months old as Mages, and have been thrust unprepared into a world where those who are supposed to be looking after them and educating them can't. They will be stumbling through, without a clue as to how they are supposed to behave, what they can and can't do, and those who discover their transgressions are going to have to try and steer them straight on the fly.

Uncertainty

When they awoke, they were brought to those who will eventually be their peers and told, "this is how it is". Only now, it's not. The world they were told to expect has changed, dramatically, just as they were starting to get the hang of it. The people they would expect to look up to, to show them how it is, now are as unsure and uncertain as the player characters.

Responsibility

The player characters each have around them their support networks. Be they family, friends or work collegues, these are the people who mattered to their mortal lives. The characters are too new to being Awakened to understand why most Mages keep a distance between themselves and the Sleepers around them. How much responsibility do the player characters have to these people?

Please Note

All information on the website is from the point of view of the Player Characters. As a result it may be incomplete, misleading, contradictory or just plain wrong. This is deliberate. The website will be updated as the information available to the Pc's changes over the course of play.
